Select stiffness after shape
The Shape 1 is Mudtools’ general kidney outline for throwing, hand-building and sculpting. The useful choice within this family is how readily the rib flexes. Red is very soft, yellow soft, green medium and blue firm. These are functional variants rather than four separate tools you must buy.
Make a purposeful first purchase
If you already use a kidney rib in class, compare the feel you know with the flexibility labels instead of collecting every color. A more flexible tool can follow a curve differently from a firmer one, but the result still depends on support and pressure. Shape 0 addresses smaller spaces; Shape 4 adds a more defined corner. Choose one of those when the outline itself is the limitation, rather than expecting another Shape 1 firmness to reach every contour.
