Scrape heavy slip and scraps into a collection container before rinsing. That reduces what reaches the plumbing and makes the remaining wash water easier to manage.
Scrape first, rinse second
Move usable wet scraps into a labeled reclaim container. Wipe heavy slip from tools and the detached pan before washing them. A flexible scraper or sponge can transfer much of that material without sending a stream of water through the plumbing.

Use settling to collect solids, not certify water
If rinse water stands, some suspended clay can settle.
