Replace a wheel when a recurring limitation has a clear equipment solution. First identify what is stopping the work: capacity, bat clearance, working height or control placement. A difficult centering session alone does not tell you that the wheel needs upgrading.
Record the limitation for several sessions
Note the form, clay amount and consistency, bat and specific difficulty. Does it happen with every piece or only one clay body? Does the bat hit the pan? Do you struggle to reach the pedal? Ask an instructor to assess technique when that may be involved.
A record such as “the required bat cannot clear the pan” points to a measurable replacement requirement. “The wheel feels underpowered” still needs investigation.
Three reasons an upgrade may help
