Wheelhead diameter, bat dimensions and centering capacity are three separate specifications. Diameter describes the rotating platform; capacity is the manufacturer’s stated clay rating. Bat fit determines which removable working surfaces you can use.
Read the dimensions together
An 11-inch head does not impose an 11-inch finished-pot limit. An approved bat may overhang it, while the splash pan and your hands impose other clearance limits. Wide work also needs a place to land after removal.
SHIMPO’s ASPIRE demonstrates the distinction: a 7-inch head works with dedicated 9.75-inch bats and carries a stated 20-pound centering rating. Small diameter alone does not identify a toy wheel.
Compare rated capacity separately
Speedball rates Artista at 25 pounds and Clay Boss at 100 pounds; SHIMPO rates VL-LITE at 25 pounds. These are manufacturer claims, not measurements made by this site. Your ability to center a given amount also depends on clay and technique.
A rating substantially above your regular work may offer future room, but it does not make small forms easier to learn. Use the amount you intend to work with as the starting point.
Four bat-fit measurements
- Attachment method: pins, a dedicated system or another approved method.
- Pin spacing and size where applicable.
- Bat diameter and thickness allowed by the wheel.
- Clearance from the splash pan and other components.
An Artista example
The Artista manual specifies 10-inch center-to-center bat-pin spacing despite its 11-inch head. It also gives conditions for larger bats and pan removal. Check those instructions rather than inferring fit from the head diameter.
For your next planned form, note clay amount, base width and the bat you want to use. Check those against the wheel’s limits. If an adapter is involved, include its added height and clearance requirements.
