Pottery Wheel Not Spinning? Safe Checks Before Service

When a wheel will not spin, record what still happens before guessing which part failed. A lit display, a moving pedal and a stationary head are observations for support, not proof that the motor needs replacement.

When to leave it disconnected

Smoke, burning odor, damaged wiring, water in electrical parts or an unusual mechanical sound means stop using the wheel. Disconnect it if you can do so safely and contact the manufacturer. Repeated restarts add no useful diagnosis.

Do not push the head to help the motor start or reach into the drive system. A machine that seems inactive may start unexpectedly. Covers and protective devices must remain in place.

Identify the machine and the symptom

Photograph the model label and note the serial number. Find the matching manual, including the correct version for an older machine. A visually similar control panel is not evidence that an online reset sequence applies.

  • Did the problem occur at startup or partway through normal use?
  • Does an indicator or display illuminate?
  • Does the ordinary control move as expected?
  • Was the wheel recently moved, cleaned or fitted with another accessory?
  • Is this the first occurrence or a returning fault?

Make only the external checks the manual permits

With the wheel off, inspect the ordinary plug and user-accessible connections for obvious damage. Follow the specified startup control position and sequence. Do not dismantle a connector or open the controller to look for a simple fix.

If a breaker or other protection has operated, follow the manual and seek the appropriate service advice. Repeatedly resetting it, fitting a different-rated component or bypassing it is not a troubleshooting method.

Send one complete service request

Include the machine identity, purchase information and answers to the symptom questions. Describe when the problem began and what changed immediately beforehand. State the clay load as context, not as an untested diagnosis of overload.

If support requests a video, record only safe ordinary operation with covers in place and the camera outside the working area. Ask which components need to be returned before packaging anything. SHIMPO’s support hub separates manuals, troubleshooting and parts by model; use the equivalent route for the wheel you own.

Questions about this topic

The display lights up. Does that rule out a power problem?

No. It does not establish that every internal circuit is working. Include it in the symptom report.

Should I buy a pedal before contacting support?

Only if the fault and correct replacement have been established. Otherwise it is a guess that may leave the problem unresolved.
